Prepare your pneumatic system for winter

Prepare Your Pneumatic Systems for Winter

As temperatures drop, it’s important to make sure your compressed air systems are ready to handle the colder months ahead. Winter conditions can have a big impact on system efficiency, reliability, and lifespan, especially if preventative maintenance has been overlooked.

Here are a few key steps to help keep your system running smoothly through winter:

1. Check and Change Compressor Oil

Cold weather can thicken compressor oil, reducing lubrication and increasing wear on internal components.
If your compressor oil is due for a change, or hasn’t been replaced in a while, now is the perfect time.
Fresh oil helps maintain optimal viscosity and ensures smoother operation during cold starts.

2. Drain Condensate Regularly

As air cools, moisture in your compressed air lines can condense more rapidly. Excess water can cause rust, corrosion, and damage to pneumatic tools and valves. Make sure automatic or manual drains are functioning correctly and check them more frequently throughout winter.

3. Inspect Filters and Air Dryers

Moisture and dirt are the enemies of compressed air systems. Check your intake filters, inline filters, and dryers to ensure they’re clean and working efficiently. If your system uses desiccant or refrigerant dryers, make sure they’re serviced and performing effectively to keep air dry in colder, more humid conditions.

4. Check for Leaks and Pressure Drops

Cold temperatures can cause seals to contract, leading to small air leaks that reduce system efficiency.
Air System Controls can carry out out a leak detection check, especially around fittings, couplings, and valves, and make any necessary repairs before the system is under heavier winter load.

5. Protect External Pipework and Equipment

If any of your air lines, valves, or tanks are located in unheated areas, consider insulating or lagging them to prevent freezing and condensation buildup. For outdoor or exposed equipment, ensure it’s adequately sheltered or heated where possible.

At Air System Controls, we stock a wide range of compressor oils, filters, drains, and pneumatic components to help keep your system performing at its best, all year round. Whether you’re running a small workshop compressor or a full industrial air system, a little maintenance now can prevent costly downtime later.
